2012 Holiday Assignment

Reading and Writing Tasks
1. To Kill A Mockingbird is a fiction adapted from real life events about how prejudice was rife during the 1930s in America. It is a simple, yet touching story, bringing a powerful message about how bad the African-Americans’ living conditions were like at that time. We also see a memorable, heroic figure in Atticus Finch, a lawyer with a strong conscience who helped the African-Americans who were discriminated against and accused by the Americans.

I like this story as it has a great impact on me and told through the eyes of Scout, who is just a child, I can feel her naivety and innocence and her strong feelings against discrimination.

I think that it’s target audience is for young adults and adults as the way it is written may not be easy for children to understand. Also, it includes some mild adult situations.

I recommend this story to those who are looking for touching and heartwarming stories. To young adults and teenagers, it can give them a better idea of 1930s America and discrimination. As for adults, it can bring them back in time and fill them with a sense of nostalgia.

2. I think that Teenage magazine, as the name suggests, is targeted at young adults as it is filled with updates about only the latest music trends and young idols. The titles of each article are bold, and designed to be eye-catching. They are also made up of a short phrase of just a few words and are succinct, and straight to the point. For example, “Rock Royalty” is displayed in a huge and bright red font. This easily catches the attention of Rock fans and makes them want to read on. It is also common that the name of the band is included in the title to catch the interest of their fans. The titles also rely on the content of the article. The titles are also suited to the emotions carried in the article for example "Hear My Song" for a touching article.

Viewing and Listening Tasks
1. Rise of The Guardians is a Christmas-themed movie targeted at children. It is about The Guardians, whose job is to protect children from fear. The children’s trust in them is what keeps them strong and when Pitch attempts to destroy the Guardians, the Guardians were able to defeat him with the help of the children. I think that this show is very heartwarming and suitable to watch as a whole family.

4. The Teddy Bear museum is a popular tourist attraction in Korea, Busan. It boasts an impressive variety of teddy bears in its collection. The Museum has a History Hall where you can witness the 100-year history of teddy bears including famous scenes, popular teddy bears of different eras, and antique teddy bears. There is also an Art Hall, where latest artworks of world famous designers, and animation characters that are popular with children. I think that by arranging the bears to recreate different points in history, children can learn some simple history in this fun way.

5. I have watched the live performance of the play Twelfth Night, by William Shakespeare. It was very interesting and the actors played their roles very convincingly. They managed to captivate the audience by adapting the play into the modern era, all the while speaking in Shakespearean english. They also added in some humorous scenes which sent the crowd roaring with laughter. I recommend this play to all Shakespeare enthusiasts as it is very well acted out by the cast and will be sure to make you feel as if you were inside the play and its triangular love twists.
